Marian Wright Edelman-"As I have grown older and wearier trying to help get our nation to put children first and become more worried about my own and other people's children growing up in an America where moral and common sense and family and community values are disintegrating, I pray more and more." Guide My Feet Prayers and Meditations For Our Children (1995)
Lilian Katz-“Curriculum, “should help children make deeper and
fuller understanding of their own experience.” Going outside
the classroom – and observing what is right there – that is where
meaningful learning happens. Words of Wisdom
Louise Derman Sparks said in her interview that her passion is, "To make sure that all children were taught in environments and in ways that truly nurtured their ability to grow and develop to their fullest ability."
The Lilian Katz quote about curriculum is great. I have been so frustrated lately about the fact that we are somewhat being made to teach to the test. The curriculum should indeed be helping children build on their background knowledge that they have already gained by real life experiences. Being able to generalize is s tough thing for a lot of students. They look at life like home is home and school is school. If we as educaors focused on deepening the curriculum to teach more about life in general and how it relates to academics, we will definitely have more intelligent and culturally sound students.
ReplyDeleteI think going outside of the classroom is very important. I remember when I was in school and we would go on different trips to museums, and different places. Many kids don't get to expereince leaving their neighborhood and school trips are the only way they can learn other experiences.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment and you are right my kids love going on field trips. Just the bus ride excites them. So far this year my class has been to a local farm, a play and the aquarium.
